Brian’s story

Brian had his leg amputated below the knee in December 2021 and a prosthetic limb fitted. The NHS referred him to the Centre. With 48 years of driving experience, Brian wanted to continue driving in an adapted vehicle. After his on-road assessment and driving practice, Brian found the twin flip left foot accelerator easier to use than he had anticipated. The Centre’s assessors thought he would need only 6 hours’ driving tuition with an approved driving instructor and then return for a review assessment which took place in September 2022. Brian is now safe to drive with the adaptation. Brian has also received funding for it for driving lessons from the DAG scheme.

He was also interested in finding a suitable lighter wheelchair (though he normally walks with sticks) and the Centre provided advice on this.
