Theory lessons

Theory lessons are available at our centres in Leeds and York. Please see Contact page for the address and directions to each centre.

William Merritt Disabled Living Centre now offers expert support to people preparing for their driving theory test (pilot programme)

The Department for Transport has funded theory test support to help people with neurodiversity, additional needs and learning difficulties pass their driving theory test. Individuals can have up to six hours of free support with an approved driving instructor. We are now delivering this scheme through our centres in Leeds and York.

We have already helped more than forty students pass their theory test, and are supporting a further twenty students with lessons and look forward to helping them gain their independence. Our students have a range of difficulties, from dyslexia, Autism, deaf and hard of hearing, or just problems retaining information and we endeavour to make our sessions fun and engaging to make learning less stressful. You do not need to have a formal diagnosis to access our support, but if you are unsure, please just contact us and can tell you if you will qualify for our help.

Our accrediting body, Driving Mobility, manage this excellent project. The initial funding lasts until June 2025 and we are hopeful the trial will continue and become a permanent source of help for people across the entire United Kingdom.

Driving lessons are charged based on your location, please click here for more details or contact the Centre.

Theory lessons are set up to support learners who require additional assistance to help pass the theory test of driving.

You will need to provide proof of your needs for this programme and we can look at getting you started. You also will need to have your provisional licence.

Our driving instructors will usually have a discussion with you before hand about your learning needs and what the programme offers.

Lessons are conducted on a 1-1 basis in a quiet space or in your own home (if available).

Using a mixture of online learning, flash cards and tuition you will gain a comprehensive understanding of your theory test. You will also be given support on how to book your theory test and any specialist requirements will be recommended.
