Out & about

Wheelchairs for all ages

Adults
We have a wide range of powered and manual wheelchairs here at the Centre which you can try out during an assessment with us.  We do not sell wheelchairs but we offer independent and objective advice by qualified and trained occupational therapists and can give you details of suppliers and other relevant information. Occasionally we need to do joint assessments with a local representative who will bring a selection of products or a specific piece of equipment. We have a track at the Centre where clients can try out powered wheelchairs over different surfaces, cambers and road humps.

William Merritt Centre have teamed up with Experience Community to deliver Manual Wheelchair Skills training for wheelchair users, please check out our information page.

We also have a selection of ramps including folding ramps, channel ramps and threshold ramps. There are often a variety of solutions to help you adapt your property, but we always recommend that you arrange a no obligation home demonstration by a local supplier to assess any ramp.  It is always worth contacting your local occupational therapy team in Social Services as they should be able to advise you of any problems in accessing your property.

How do I book an assessment?

Use the Book button below to be taken to a form to complete. Once the assessment is booked a short questionnaire will be sent to you which needs to be returned before the assessment. This is so we can ensure the best equipment is available for you on the day of the assessment. There is no charge for the assessment.

What happens at the assessment?

An occupational therapist will complete a brief interview first asking details about your medical condition or disability and how this affects you. The occupational therapist will then carry out a practical assessment to check you can manoeuvre the wheelchair safely within the Centre and outdoors.

What happens after the assessment?

You will receive advice and information on the equipment that you tried and a list of reputable retailers and funding sources, usually this is sent as a report after the assessment. We can also send reports to funding sources to confirm that the equipment you tried is suitable and needed.  If you are assessed as not being safe to drive a powered wheelchair the occupational therapist will discuss this with you.

Children under five
There are two powered wheelchairs to choose from:

Bugzi

Wizzybug

Wizzybug

Wizzybug is a powered wheelchair designed specifically for children under five who, due to their condition, are unable to walk, who can only walk with difficulty or who may need to save energy for other activities so that they can experience mobility and fun.

Wizzybug can be used indoors, at home and at pre-school, and outdoors in accessible areas such as gardens, playgrounds and parks.

It is not expected that Wizzybug will be a child’s only method of getting around, but it will be a useful, child-friendly addition to other mobility equipment.

Requests are welcome from both therapists and families. Please contact Designability’s occupational therapy team on 01225 824103, who will help you decide whether the Wizzybug might be beneficial for your child. Normally Wizzybug will be ready to take home on the day of the assessment.  No deposit is needed.

Car seats

Car seat clinics take place at the Centre in Leeds every 6 weeks. Our Sheffield Centre will arrange them depending on demand at any particular time. An estimated 74% of car seats are fitted incorrectly.  At our car seat clinic our paediatric occupational therapist will make sure your child’s car seat is compatible with your vehicle.  They will consider the postural needs of your child and how you will help your child get into and out of the car, considering your moving and handling needs too.
