Funding Options for Mobility Equipment in West Yorkshire
Finding the right mobility equipment can make a huge difference to independence, confidence and quality of life. Whether you need a wheelchair, mobility scooter, specialist seating, bathing equipment or daily living aids, many people are unsure where to start when it comes to funding.
The good news is that there are a range of funding options available across West Yorkshire to help individuals access the equipment they need.

NHS / Adult Social Care / Children’s Services / Joint Community Equipment Services
In some situations, equipment may be provided for the long-term following an assessment by a healthcare professional such as an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist.
This may include:
- Pressure care equipment
- Walking aids
- Specialist seating
- Bathing or toileting equipment
- Minor adaptations
Eligibility and equipment provision can vary depending on clinical need and local NHS criteria. In some situations a financial assessment may be carried out depending on the service or equipment required.
Manual and powered wheelchairs may be available on loan following a referral from a GP or other healthcare professional to your local NHS Wheelchair Service. Eligibility is determined by each NHS Wheelchair Service, as all services operate according to their own assessment criteria.
Charitable Funding
Many charities offer grants towards mobility equipment for children and adults with disabilities, long-term conditions or limited financial resources, although the process can be quite lengthy.
Funding may be available for:
- Powered wheelchairs
- Mobility scooters
- Specialist trikes
- Rise and recline chairs
- Adapted beds
- Vehicle adaptations
- Daily living equipment
Some charities support specific conditions, age groups, occupations or geographical areas, while others provide wider support across the UK.
Applications often require:
- A professional assessment or recommendation
- Quotes for equipment
- Supporting medical information
- Evidence of financial need

Access to Work
For individuals who are employed or about to start work, the UK Government’s Access to Work scheme may help fund or partially fund equipment or adaptations needed to remain in work.
This can include:
- Travel support
- Adapted equipment
- Workplace assessments
- Vehicle adaptations
- Specialist seating or technology
Access to Work is designed to support disabled people and those with long-term health conditions in employment.
Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
While Personal Independence Payment is not specifically intended to purchase equipment, some individuals choose to use part of their mobility or daily living component towards mobility aids or adaptations.
Motability Scheme
Individuals in receipt of enhanced mobility rate, Personal Independence Payment (PIP) are eligible for the Motability Scheme which allows eligible individuals to exchange their qualifying mobility allowance for a leased vehicle, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), scooter or powered wheelchair.
The scheme can include:
- Insurance
- Servicing and maintenance
- Breakdown cover
- Tyres and repairs
For many people, this can provide a more affordable route to accessible transport.
Fundraising and Community Support
Some families and individuals choose to raise funds independently through:
- Crowdfunding platforms
- Community fundraising events
- Local businesses
- Schools, clubs or community groups
The Importance of an Independent Assessment
Before applying for funding, it is important to ensure the equipment recommended is appropriate for the individual’s needs, lifestyle and environment.
An independent assessment can help:
- Identify the most suitable equipment
- Avoid costly mistakes
- Provide supporting evidence for funding applications
- Ensure equipment is safe and effective
- Professional assessment reports are often required by charities and funding organisations before financial support can be considered.
